Privacy Policy

Last updated: 11 September 2026

OLWeather ("OLWeather", "we", "our", or "the app") provides weather forecasts, official weather warnings, weather alerts, planning scores, activity guidance, regional context, and optional place and tourism suggestions, on the OLWeather Android app and at olweather.com. This Privacy Policy explains how OLWeather accesses, uses, stores, and shares information.

Your consent

By downloading, installing, or using the app, or by using the website, you consent to the collection, use, storage, and sharing of information as specifically described in this Privacy Policy. Where a specific feature requires your separate, explicit opt-in consent under this policy — such as location access, notification permissions, or sharing sensor data to improve forecasting models — that feature will only access or share the related information after you have given that specific consent, and you may withdraw it at any time as described in "Permissions and choices" below.

If you do not agree with how OLWeather accesses, uses, stores, or shares information as described in this Privacy Policy, do not use the app or website.

Information OLWeather accesses and uses

Location information

If you grant location permission (in the app) or allow browser location (on the website), OLWeather may access precise or approximate coordinates to identify your current area and request location-specific weather information. You can instead choose a location manually. Saved locations and the currently selected location are stored on your device or in your browser.

Coordinates or place queries may be transmitted over an encrypted connection to weather, alert, geocoding, environmental, and geographic-data providers to deliver app and website features.

Weather, forecast, alert, and environmental information

OLWeather processes current conditions, hourly and daily forecasts, official warning and alert information where available, and related environmental inputs to generate weather displays and planning guidance. Forecasts and alerts may be cached on your device or in your browser so the latest available information can remain visible when a fresh connection is unavailable.

Official warnings (such as from NDMA SACHET in India, or NOAA/NWS in the United States) are shown as returned by the issuing authority and attributed to that authority. They reflect the official feed at the time of the request and are not an independent OLWeather safety determination.

App settings and local activity

Theme, units, motion preferences, notification preferences, saved locations, cached forecasts, local reminders, widget information, and purchase status may be stored locally on your device or in your browser. OLWeather does not require an OLWeather account and does not operate an OLWeather cloud-sync account system.

Push notifications

If you enable alert notifications in the app, OLWeather stores a single push-notification token together with an approximate location on OLWeather's server, so that relevant alerts can be delivered to your device based on your location. This one enablement covers all location-based push alerts OLWeather currently supports: official weather warnings (NDMA SACHET in India, NOAA/NWS in the United States), United States avalanche danger alerts (sourced from Avalanche.org), and nearby-earthquake alerts (sourced from USGS) — enabling alert notifications does not let you separately opt in or out of each hazard type individually; you may only enable or disable push alerts as a whole. This information is retained only as long as needed to deliver alerts and is automatically removed after a bounded retention period. Delivery itself uses Firebase Cloud Messaging (a Google service).

Optional sensor data sharing and on-device model improvement

If you separately opt in to sharing sensor data to help improve OLWeather's forecasting models, that data is encrypted on your device before it is uploaded, using a key that is generated on your device and never transmitted to OLWeather's servers. OLWeather's servers cannot decrypt this uploaded data. This is off by default and requires your explicit opt-in.

Separately, OLWeather's on-device model-improvement feature (federated learning) only ever transmits small, aggregated numeric model values, never raw sensor data, when combining learning across devices.

Advertising

The free version of the app may display advertising supplied by Google AdMob. The website may display advertising supplied by Adsterra, shown only in dedicated regions of the page, never inside forecast, warning, or planning content. These advertising providers may process information such as device or advertising identifiers, IP address, approximate location inferred from IP, app or page interactions, ad interactions, and diagnostic information for advertising, measurement, fraud prevention, security, and compliance. Their handling of this information is governed by their own privacy policies and the advertising choices available through the providers and your device or browser.

In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the app asks for your choice through Google's consent form before any ad is requested. If you decline, no ads are requested and the rest of the app still works. You can change your choice later in Settings. AdMob may use your device's advertising ID for advertising. You can reset or opt out of it in your Android settings.

Purchases

OLWeather Premium is processed by Google Play Billing. Google Play handles payment information and purchase processing. OLWeather receives purchase and entitlement information needed to provide or restore Premium access; OLWeather does not receive full payment-card details.

Places, activities, and nearby attractions

OLWeather may display place names, categories, activities, approximate regional context, and independently written summaries for informational planning. Records can be marked verified or unverified. Unverified information must be confirmed locally. Opening status, hours, prices, accessibility, transport, safety conditions, and availability may change. OLWeather is not affiliated with or endorsed by listed venues unless expressly stated.

How information is shared

OLWeather transmits only information reasonably needed to provide a requested feature to the applicable service provider. Examples include coordinates for local weather, place text for location search, and device or advertising information processed by Google AdMob or Adsterra. Information may also be disclosed when required by law, to protect users or the service, or in connection with a lawful transfer of the app or website, subject to applicable law.

Service providers

OLWeather uses the following third-party services:

These providers process information under their own privacy policies, terms, and retention practices.

Data storage and retention

OLWeather stores settings, saved locations, cached weather, alerts, and related app state locally for as long as needed to provide the feature or until you remove the data. You can remove saved locations and change preferences in the app or website. You can clear OLWeather's storage in Android settings, clear your browser's site data, or uninstall the app to remove local data, subject to Android backup or restore behavior.

If you enable alert notifications, a push-notification token and an approximate location are also stored on OLWeather's server, retained only as long as needed for alert delivery, per the "Push notifications" section above.

OLWeather does not control the retention practices of third-party providers. Information transmitted to those providers is governed by their respective policies.

Data deletion

If you have opted in to sensor data sharing (see "Optional sensor data sharing and on-device model improvement" above), you can request deletion of that data at any time from Privacy Settings in the app by disabling data sharing. This immediately deletes the sensor and model data cached locally on your device, requests deletion of the corresponding copies from OLWeather's server and Google Drive (normally completed within 24 hours), and irreversibly revokes the on-device encryption key used for that data, so it can no longer be decrypted even if a remote copy is not yet deleted.

For other locally stored app data (settings, saved locations, cached forecasts), you can remove it directly in the app, clear OLWeather's storage in Android settings, clear your browser's site data for olweather.com, or uninstall the app. For anything stored on OLWeather's servers outside the sensor-data-sharing feature (such as a push-notification token), contact olweather.app@gmail.com.

Security

OLWeather uses encrypted HTTPS connections for supported network requests. No method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure, and absolute security cannot be guaranteed.

Permissions and choices

You may deny or revoke location and notification permissions in Android settings, or deny browser location on the website. You may choose a manual location instead of device location. You may disable alerts or clear local app or site data. Some features will not work when the related permission or information is unavailable.

Children's privacy

OLWeather is a general weather and planning product and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly operate an account system that collects personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app or website, contact us at olweather.app@gmail.com.

International use

Third-party service providers may process information in countries other than the country where you use OLWeather. Their privacy policies describe their own processing and transfer safeguards.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when app or website features, legal requirements, or service providers change. The "Last updated" date identifies the latest version. Material changes will be reflected in the app, on this page, or both, as appropriate.
